C.H.R.I.S. on The Block
I had the opportunity to chop it up with New York Indie Artist Chris Thompson aka as C.H.R.I.S., We talk about his musical influences and why he chose to do music that glorify God.
Q: What is the meaning of the acronym C.H.R.I.S.?
Chris Thompson: The acronym means Christ has rizen inside me. Don’t ask where the “me” came from because I have no clue lol lol…
Q: How did you get involved in the music industry?
Chris Thompson: When I was very young my cousin, Bishop Eric McDaniel, was very good friends with Hezekiah Walker and I would see him at my uncle’s church, Bishop Eric McDaniel’s dad,the late Bishop Allen McDaniel. All of my cousins were musicians and I played drums. My uncles on my fathers side used to be with Wu-tang and one of my uncles was their road manager. Music industry people were always around me, I just never really cared. I would rap when I was with the homies, but in my opinion I wasn’t half as nice as them. My whole hood was basically the industry. I grew up in the same hood as 50cent. I would see him on a daily basis almost. Same thing with freeky Tah of the lost Boyz. On any given day, you’d catch Onyx or Mic Geronimo on Jamaica Ave in queens.
Again, I never had a desire to be in the “industry”. My thing was hoops and money. When I gave my life to the lord I still didn’t want to rap. I actually sat for 4 years and was just taught the word of God and then God spoke to me through one of my leaders and said gospel hip hop will be your ministry. That’s how I got involved.
Q: Who/what are some of your biggest influences? How have they influenced you in your life and music career respectively?
Chris Thompson: My influences are really vast, but I was influenced by my dad just as a man and musically the list is crazy long! I’ll settle for AZ, Pun, Nas, Big, and Big L.
My dad influenced me as a man just based on how he moved and delt with me as a youngin. I wasn’t the easiest kid and I had a lot of issues, but he was always there to hold me down. The artist that I mentioned are there for obvious reasons. Ive never bit any ones style but there were certain things about them that I liked and I took those small pieces and made them my own.
Q: When did you know that you wanted to use your music to glorify God?
Chris Thompson: There wasn’t a specific moment where I just knew. It just sort of happened and I just sort of received it lol.
Q: Why is it imperative that those living in the world except and welcome the truth into their lives? What constitutes the truth for you?
Chris Thompson: The crazy thing about your question is that people would rather a lie then the truth. The truth is final…the truth can’t change…the truth will never be altered. The consistency of truth is what most people have a hard time dealing with. Life would be so much easier if we understood what truth really is.
The truth to me is Christ, pointblank, end of story. Jesus said “I am the Way, the truth, and the life”. We have read and heard that scripture for many years, but if you really sat back and tried to understand what Jesus was trying to say it would blow you away. Notice that he never said that he was facts. Why is that? Because facts can change, but the truth is consistent. People need truth because without it we will never know true peace. Welcome to the truth!
